My approach to commissions is flexible, and I can offer a full or partial architectural service including:

  • feasibility studies

  • sketch design

  • planning applications

  • building regulations submissions

  • detail design and specification

  • tender information

  • building contract administration.

I am an RIBA chartered architect and a registered Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Partner.

Design approach
My ambition for every project is to foster a design process that is both enjoyable and exciting for the client, through the use of evolving sketch views.

Freehand sketching is a key tool throughout all my projects, as I find it helps develop a strong visual sense of a scheme throughout all stages of the process, whether it is in the conceptual character at the outset, development of ideas towards construction, or communicating detail on site.

Throughout this 'sketching' process I bring to bear my own experience, intuition, thoroughness and practical expertise to ensure a constant check against other sometimes conflicting factors; eg whole project costs, likely planning or building regulation constraints, programme and construction implications.

I work with my clients, be they a family, community group or larger organisation, to achieve a unique and appropriate solution - one which is sensitive to place, inspired by brief, client and site, and rooted in reality and practicality.

Design approach

I work with my clients, be they a family, community group or larger organization, to achieve a unique and appropriate solution - one which is sensitive to place, inspired by brief, client and site, and rooted in reality and practicality.

At the heart of this approach is the use of three-dimensional sketches to explore a design with my clients, drawing out their ideas and vision for their building project and raising their ambition for its potential. I develop a strong visual sense of the scheme throughout all stages of the process, whether it is in the conceptual character at the outset or the fine detail as the design is developed.

Throughout this 'sketching' process I bring to bear my own experience, intuition, thoroughness and practical expertise to ensure a constant check against other sometimes conflicting factors; eg whole project costs, likely planning or building regulation constraints, programme and construction implications.

Sustainability

A concern for the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability is central to my practice.

Deciding on appropriate technologies for a project can be a daunting task, with impartial advice often hard to obtain. With a new building the choice of materials, orientation, and building form can all be developed at an early stage to maximise the environmental performance and ultimate carbon footprint of the finished building. With existing structures however it is necessary to balance often conflicting factors eg aesthetic alterations, conservation constraints, existing materials and construction details, appropriate services and of course cost.

My task is to liaise with the client to achieve the optimum design and practical solution both in relation to environmental responsibility and my client's broader requirements and budget. I work with an experienced architectural technician with a passion for sustainable construction, and we ensure that the environmental approach to each project is developed through a balanced, holistic view of the client's needs.

conservation

I have considerable experience of working within the conservation field including extensions to and refurbishment of listed buildings and buildings within a sensitive conservation context.

A member of SPAB (Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings) I undertook the Repair of Old Buildings Course for construction professionals in 2005.

I am currently a team member in a large Arts Council/HLF/English Heritage-funded conservation project in St Ives with Long and Kentish architects - the refurbishment and extension of the Grade 2* listed Porthmeor Artist's studios, School of Painting and fishermen's cellars.

Aside from my strictly architectural work I am happy to undertake detailed architectural records of existing buildings. The adjacent drawings, carried out at Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire with Jim McKinney, won the Folly Fellowship Award for Measured Drawing and were exhibited at the Royal Academy.
